Musicality in dance has two main components. You’d probably find it difficult to concentrate if you listen to songs that you either love or hate.Image by carolyntiry via Flickr What Is Musicality? Listen to songs you don’t have strong feelings about.Songs with lyrics in a language you understand will likely distract you from simple tasks such as reading. Your music should always be in the background, giving you room to focus on your studying. Experimental music that changes abruptly or has an inconsistent rhythm will keep you guessing about what to expect, which can be very distracting. If you think you’d benefit from listening to music, though, you should keep these tips in mind: It also depends on how much you personally like the music you’re listening to - if it’s an unfamiliar genre or something you find unpleasant, you’re less likely to be able to focus. That being said, music is not an effective focusing tool for every student as it affects everyone in a different way. These flaws trigger the cerebrum which in turn can help improve your focus. Other genres, like lo-fi, help the frontal lobe in our brains to focus specifically because it is recorded with intentional imperfections, such as misplayed notes, low hums, environmental noise, and more. Classical music - which is often touted to be the ultimate study focus music - is so effective because it arouses your brain, making it easier to absorb new information in a meaningful way. Popular study focus music genres include classical music, film scores, lo-fi (low-fidelity), and world music. Students who wish to study with music can consider diverting to slower, instrumental music. Similarly, the University of Wales found that sometimes, music - especially music with lyrics - can worsen a student’s working memory and reading comprehension. A University of Toronto study shows that loud music negatively affects reading comprehension, agitating rather than focusing the listener. Santiago/AFP Why is study focus music so effective? Listening to music was the most popular side activity for teens who juggled studying with another task. This is because musical activity serves as a cognitive exercise for the brain, which then trains it for more challenging tasks in the future. In fact, one study showed that listening to music enabled test takers to complete more questions within an allotted time frame and get more answers right. In simple terms, it helps your brain function. Science shows that music can help improve cognitive performance. Music helps improve your brain functions.Cambridge University found that hip-hop music in particular provides an uplifting effect on listeners, which can in turn help them accept, manage, and deal with mental health issues better. In fact, back in 2006, researchers at Stanford University discovered that listening to music changes brain functioning in the same way that medication does. Here, you have a simple solution: listen to music.Ĭertain types of music, particularly those with a slow tempo, can have a relaxing effect on your mind. If you have a test or assignment coming up, chances are your stress levels are at an all-time high. This is why listening to certain songs may trigger specific memories in your mind. This is because the brain systems used for processing music and language - that is, for memorising information - are the same. Doctors would often use music and lyrics to help patients recall their lost memories. For example, a study found that patients with memory loss would often remember songs and specific lyrics. Listening to music is one of the best ways to improve your memory. There are many reasons why music is such an effective tool to help you study. Researchers also found that listening to music was the most popular side activity for teens who juggled studying with another task. A survey showed that around 60% of students tend to listen to music while studying. If this sounds like you, you’re one of the thousands of students who do the same thing. Or perhaps you enjoy going to the library, slipping your headphones on, and listening to songs while you work. You may have noticed that listening to certain genres improved your concentration, especially if you’ve been studying in louder environments such as cafes. If you’re a student, you’re likely to have crafted or listened to a study focus music playlist at least once in your life. It’s been proven that listening to certain types of music in specific situations can boost productivity and mood, from enhancing the quality of your workout to reducing stress and anxiety.

The researchers asked 158 questions of the lucid dreamers, who responded correctly 18.6% of the time, the researchers report today in Current Biology. To answer, dreamers used the signals they had been taught before falling asleep, which included smiling or frowning, moving their eyes multiple times to indicate a sum, or, in the German lab, moving their eyes in patterns that matched Morse code. In those tests, researchers asked the dreamers simple yes or no questions or math problems, like eight minus six. Out of a total of 57 sleeping sessions, six individuals signaled they were lucid dreaming in 15 of them. Sleepers were told to signal they had entered a lucid dream and answer questions by moving their eyes and face in particular ways-by, for example, moving their eyes three times to the left.Īs the participants fell asleep, the scientists monitored their brain activity, eye movement, and facial muscle contractions-common indicators of REM sleep-with electroencephalogram helmets outfitted with electrodes. Each lab used a different way to communicate with the sleeper, from spoken questions to flashing lights. Nap sessions were schedueled at different times: some at night, when people would regularly go to bed, and others early in the morning. The idea was those cues would signal to participants that they were dreaming. The researchers first trained participants to recognize when they were dreaming, by explaining how lucid dreaming works and demonstrating cues-sounds, lights, or finger tapping-that they would present while dreamers slept. They recruited 36 volunteers, including some experienced lucid dreamers and others who had never experienced a lucid dream before but remembered at least one dream a week. But these recorded only minimal responses from the sleepers and did not involve complex transmission of information.įour independent teams in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States tried to go further and establish complex two-way communication during dreams, using speech and asking questions the sleepers had never heard in their training. A few studies have tried to communicate with lucid dreamers using stimuli such as lights, shocks, and sounds to "enter" people's dreams. Although rare, this ability to recognize you are in a dream-and even control some aspects of it-can be enhanced with training. One in every two people has had at least one lucid dream, about 10% of people experience them once a month or more. Lucid dreaming got one of its first mentions in the writings of Greek philosopher Aristotle in the fourth century B.C.E., and scientists have observed it since the 1970s in experiments about the rapid eye movement (REM) phase of sleep, when most dreaming occurs. Traditionally, he says, sleep has been defined as a state in which the brain is disconnected and unaware of the outside world. "This work challenges the foundational definitions of sleep," says cognitive neuroscientist Benjamin Baird of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, who studies sleep and dreams but was not part of the study. The findings, from four labs and 36 participants, suggest people can receive and process complex external information while sleeping. For the first time, researchers have had "conversations" involving novel questions and math problems with lucid dreamers-people who are aware that they are dreaming. Now, it seems this science fiction plot is one baby step closer to reality. In the movie Inception, Leonardo DiCaprio enters into other people's dreams to interact with them and steal secrets from their subconscious.
